The Swedish Roundpole FenceThe Swedish Roundpole Fence

The Swedish fence gardsgard (also called a Swedish fence or garsgard, Norwegian: skigard, Finnish: gärdesgård  or risuaita, and Estonian: teivasaed) is a wooden fence type common to the countryside of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Estonia. It consists of upright poles put together in pairs, and rails of non-decorticated and unsplit young spruces or the tops of these trees are laid horizontally or diagonally between these uprights. These are binded by a binding cord made of saplings.

These fences were used to keep livestock out of cultivated fields and to mark property boundaries. They were also popular for hunting and herding reindeer and wild game in the forest. They have inspired many sayings, legends and predictions and it is still considered good luck for a house to be surrounded by a gardsgard.
